US Deputy Secretary of State due on Monday

ISLAMABAD : U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage is due to arrive here on Monday for talks on bilateral and regional issues, focusing on the two countries cooperation against terrorism.

"The Deputy Secretary will discuss a wide range of issues with officials, including bilateral relations, regional issues, the global war on terrorism, and supporting Iraq's reconstruction and transition to democracy," the State Department website says.

Mr Armitage will hold official talks with Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar and will call on Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri.

He is the first senior US official to visit Pakistan after the US Presidential elections.

Mr Armitage is scheduled to visit India and Afghanistan, diplomatic sources said.

Meanwhile the new American ambassador to Pakistan, Ryan Crocker, arrived on Sunday to take up his post as envoy to one of Washington's top allies in the war on terror, the U.S. Embassy said.

Crocker, a former senior diplomat in the State Department's Middle East bureau, is expected to present credentials to President Gen. Pervez Musharraf shortly.

He replaces Nancy Powell, who has already left for Washington after serving in Pakistan for more than two years.
