Pak-US education cooperation unconditional: Nancy Powell

Govt., to continue efforts to eradicate illiteracy: Qazi

ISLAMABAD, : The United States of America accorded top priority to the education sector of Pakistan and will continue its unconditional support and assistance for the uplift of basic education in Pakistan, outgoing US ambassador to Islamabad Ms Nancy J. Powell said here Tuesday.


Nancy J. Powell said this during the ceremony organized on renovation of the community model school at Nirola FA near Islamabad. Federal Minister for Education Lt. Gen (Retd) Javed Ashraf Qazi was the chief guest on the occasion.


The out-going US envoy said that much had been done by the Pakistani government to uplift the standard of basic education in the country, especially in the far-flung areas, which were neglected in the past. She lauded the government’s efforts and strategy to eliminate illiteracy and promote quality education in the country. Nancy maintained that she would urge the congress and the US administration to more technical and financial support to Pakistan’s education sector.


The teacher-turned-diplomat also appreciated the efforts of the ministry of education is making education accessible to all. She said that the country had been doing very well as the education ministers after 1999 were successful in securing the political will at the highest level, which was lacking during the successive political government of the past. She praised the efforts of the former education minister Zobaida Jalal and said that the education sector of Pakistan had been the most advantaged social sector due to the selfless efforts of Zobaida Jalal.


Speaking on the occasion, the Federal Minister for Education Lt. Gen. (R) Javed Ashraf Qazi said that the government would always facilitated the communities, interested in establishing a school in their, locality.


He maintained that government could not absolve itself of its primary and constitutional obligation of providing basic education to the citizens of Pakistan, added that due to very limited capacity of the government education departments after the independence, the constitutional obligation could not be fulfilled. He vowed to enhance the capacity of the officials and the sections of the ministry of education for the promotion of education and eradication of illiteracy in the country.


Later on, talking to journalists, the Minister for education hoped that change of horse men in the US would not effect the existing bilateral education cooperation between the two countries and said that Pakistan, being a sovereign country was freed to devise its own policies without any dictation. He told that there were few madaris on the borders of the country who were involved in terrorism and would soon be curbed.


The Minister further told that he had met the two objectives of the education ministry committed to the Prime Minister, one by restructuring and reorganizing the ministry administratively and the other by establishing a monitoring and evaluation cell in the ministry with a task to stream line the functioning of the various organs of the ministry of education for the swift delivery of the service.
