President approves acquisition of oceanographic research vessel to develop maritime

ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday approved the acquisition of a multi-disciplinary Oceanographic research vessel for development of maritime functional requirements of various Ministries and agencies and for better utilization of living and non-living marine resources.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here Saturday presided over by President General Pervez Musharraf.

Federal Minister for Education, Science & Technology Prof Atta-ur-Rahman, Secretary S & TR Division Mr. Shahzad Hasan Pervez and other high level officials attended the meeting.

The vessel would cater to the requirements of various Ministries and agencies in the context of the recently approved National marine Policy and also help fulfilling national and international commitments under various conventions.

The President has directed Ministry of Science and Technology to carry out a survey of the continental shelve of Pakistan and to ensure that Pakistan’s claims for the extension of the continental shelve of Pakistan are filed before UN conventional on Law of Sea under Article 76 well before the expiry of the deadline.

A presentation on the Acquisition of Multi-Disciplinary Oceanographic Research Vessel was made to the President by the Ministry of Science & Technology on Saturday.

Prof. Dr. Atta-ur Rahman, Minister for Science and Technology highlighted the significance of the extension of Economic Zone (EEZ) and the resource potential that would contribute towards socio-economic growth and development. “ There is a great need for exploration and exploitation of the living and non-living resources.

The multi-disciplinary oceanographic research vessel will greatly contribute fetch finances for the country and will be a national asset, said Atta.

The President also gave approval for the purchase of a ship for the promotion of fisheries business to exploit and explore deep-sea fish stock assessment for tapping of unconventional marine resources.

The President emphasized on the need of investing in the future instead of limiting oneself to the problems of the present day. The decision to acquire the oceanographic research will greatly contribute to reap the full economic benefits offered by resources of the sea.
