EC clarifies resignations procedure

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan Saturday said that if any candidate returned from reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the National Assembly or a Provincial Assembly decides to resign, he may do so by tendering resignation in writing.

In a statement issued here, an EC spokesman said that the resignation should be submitted by the desiring candidate, under his/her hand from his/ her seat.

The spokesman further said the resignation should be addressed to the concerned party leader before the date fixed for the oath-taking by Members of the National Assembly and/or by Members of the Provincial Assemblies, as the case may be.

In such case, the party leader shall intimate the Election Commission forthwith accordingly, the statement said.

It further said that in such an eventuality the seat so vacated shall be filled in by the next person in order of precedence from the party's list of candidates, which was submitted to the Election Commission or the Provincial Election Commissioner concerned on or before 14.09.2002.
