CCTV cameras at Lahore entry, exit points soon

LAHORE : In a bid further strengthen security measures and check the movement of suspicious elements, the authorities have decided to install Close Circuit TV (CCTV) at all the entry/exit points and other vulnerable places in the provincial metropolis.

All the entry/exit points would be provided with computers which would be connected online with a central server in the CRO Branch through a Wireless Local Loop (WLL) phone line.

"These computers would have up-date data of stolen/snatched vehicles from all over Pakistan. This would help in combating the crime against property. The purchase of computers is in progress and would be completed soon", says DIG Khawaja Khalid Farooq.

He said four CRO Mobile Labs equipped with Laptop Computers would be placed at each division level in the metropolis.

These would be Rapid Response Units with complete forensic support such as finger printing, video movie, photography as well as facilities to prepare sketches of criminals, photographs of criminals and keeping the record of criminal.

A central control room would be established in the Investigation Headquarters with a computer terminal, wireless base station and complete data base. This would be available round the clock to check stolen/snatched vehicles, ownership of vehicles, complete import record of all vehicles in Pakistan, complete telephone ownership and location record of all phone subscribers in Pakistan.

This would help in combating crime like car theft/snatching, kidnapping for ransom etc.

Approval for wireless base set has been obtained from the Telecommunication Wing of Punjab Police and the process of installation is under way.

He said a proposal has been sent to the Pakistan Automobile Manufacturers Association and the Engineering Development Board to direct the car manufacturers to install a tracking mechanism on the parts of the cars being manufactured like Toyota and Suzuki.

This would be beneficial in identifying the actual ownership of vehicles that are recovered by police but are found “Cut and Weld”. Original owners would benefit from this system.

The GPS tracking devices are going to be installed in all police vehicles in Lahore to monitor their exact position at all times.

Live monitoring would take place in the control room established in Rescue 15 office. This would ensure that there is actual patrolling as per plan and would also result in checking the abuse of official vehicles. "Negotiations are under way for this installation with several private companies", the DIG said, adding that a comprehensive project is under way in collaboration with the IT Department for computerised license plates, driving licences and installation of REID ( Radio Frequency Identification Devices ) on all cars in Lahore and on all exit point.

This would result in the identification of all cars and no vehicle committing any crime would be able to leave the city with fake plates or incognito from the City, the DIG maintained.
