Nasir says government committed to improve re-preoductive health of women
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Minister for Health, Muhammad Nasir Khan says the government is committed to improve the reproductive health status of women in the country.
He inaugurating a national conference on Maternal Mortality Reduction organized by Ministry of Health in Islamabad on Tuesday.
He said fifty percent of women are malnourished and as a result between 25,000 and 30,000 women die each year and many more suffer from serious and disabling health problems.
He said government is aiming to reduce the maternal mortality to 180 per 100,000 live births by the year 2010. The main focus is on increasing the coverage and access to quality reproductive health services through strengthening the existing infrastructure, and information services.
He said government would make gynecologists available at all district hospitals and in many tehsil hospitals in a phased manner. He said under the new health policy, health sector investments are integrated with the Poverty Alleviation Plan
The Minister said seventy thousand Lady Health Workers are currently working throughout the country to provide family planning and basic health services mostly in the rural areas. Their main focus is on care of mother and children. It is planned to increase their number of 100,000 by the year 2005 targeting coverage of ninety percent of the entire population.
Representatives of donor agencies including UNICEF, UNFPA and Asian Development Bank also spoke on the occasion. They highlighted their assistance to the Women Health Project and government’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Pakistan.
Federal and Provincial health officials, doctors and representatives of NGOs are attending the three-day conference.
