WHO, UNICEF to help NWFP for eradication of polio, provision of health, education

PESHAWAR: World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have assured the NWFP government of continued cooperation for the eradication of polio, poverty and provision of health and education facilities.

This assurance was to the Chief Minister NWFP Akram Durrani Khan Durrani by the WHO and UNICEF regional directors during a meeting at the Chief Minister Secretariat on Thursday. Mr Durrani, while talking on the occasion, appreciated the efforts of the world bodies in the eradication of the crippling polio and provision of health care facilities to the people. He said the government seriously struggling for the provision of basic facilities like clean drinking water, health, education and communication facilities to the people at their doorsteps.

However, he said due to limited resources and increasing poverty, the government faced number constraints when started ground work on these schemes. He said the polio is crippling disease and the government wanted to secure its next generation form the menace and due to this reason the government was utilizing all the available resources for eradication of the disease.

The chief minister said he himself had inaugurated the anti polio mission by administering polio vaccines to small children and added the government was effectively utilizing the both the print and electronic media for creating awareness against the polio and compelling them to vaccinate their children against the disease.

The religious scholars and prayers leaders in the mosque, and representatives of the union and district councils are too the most effective tools for making the anti polio campaign more successful. However, he said prevention is the only mean to protect our people form the incurable diseases.

On the complaint f the delegates that in India the Muslims are suspicious about the anti polio programme, the chief minister assured that our religious scholars would convince the Indian Muslims abiut the utility of the campaign.

Talking about the priorities of the government, Durrani said reduction in non-developmental expenditures and maximum utilization of natural resources for universal provision of the health and education facilities to the people are the priority number one of the government.

He said in every district there would be well-equipped modern hospital so that the people could not visit main cities for health facilities. He said the government considered the provision of drinking water to every citizen as it duty and it is unfortunate that in the 21st century our people are still using the water for drains and ponds for drinking purposes. In the education sector the government had taken a number of steps and had declared education compulsory for both men and women. He said the government believed an educated mother could give better health care and education to children compared to the non educated ones.

He said in NWFP in most of the areas the people are against co education and did not snet their daughters to the schools where boys are studying. The government he said wanted to open more schools so that to provide opportunity the children to be admitted in better schools.

To provide higher education facilities to the women, he said the government wanted to start post graduate classes in degree colleges at each district and open separate women medical college and university in the province.

The Chief Minister said the government was making plans for the future and wanted to exploit the untapped natural resources for the well being of the people. For alleviating poverty, he said the government would broaden the base of its resources and utilize mineral and water for the development of industrial and agriculture sectors. With these steps, he added, the government wanted to create more employment opportunities to the people and putting the province on the fast track of development.

The Chief Minister said the government was giving special attention to the development and exploitation of the precious and semi precious stones and introduce the product in the international market for earning more foreign exchange.

Tourism sector is also the focus of special attention of the government and a status of industry would be given to the sector. The picturesque and beautiful spots of the province would be developed accordingly to attract more and more tourists form with the country and abroad.

The government would introduce the tourism sector as main sources of the province economy. For this purpose the government was improving the road network, law and order and other necessary infrastructure including transport and hotels. This would also provide employment opportunities to the local population.

The Chief Minister said the government has taken the worsening law and order as a challenge and had taken several tough decisions in this regard. In the past the rulers patronized the anti social elements for their vested interest, however, the present government had tightened the noose around the anti social elements so that to provide relief to the common man.

The government believed that only peace to pave the way for the development and prosperity of the nation. He said protection of life and property of the people was the responsibility of the government and the irresponsible attitude of the past regimes had dented the people confidence on the government in this regard.

He said the government was vigorously pursuing its policy of providing education and health facilities and employment opportunities so that to alleviate poverty and backwardness. The government had made education up to middle level as compulsory and free up to metric level where the students would be given uniform and text books free.

The Chief Minister said to listen to the people problems he had embarked upon visiting each district of the province. So far he said he had visited 12 districts and listened to the people in the presence of their elected representatives and issued directives for their resolution.

In the past he said the developmental programmes were finalized in the secretariat, but the present government had changed this culture and now development programmes are constituted keeping in view the problems faced by the people of an area.

Earlier, the officers of the WHO and UNICEF briefed the Chief Minister about the activities of their respective organisations. They also appreciated the efforts of the present government particularly in connection with eradication of polio.

They said due to effective monitoring system the numbers of polio cases have been drastically reduced. They also lauded the government for its people friendly policies and its agenda for provision fo clean drinking water, health and education facilities to the people at their doorsteps.

They assured the chief minister of full cooperation in provision of health and education facilities and declared the efforts against polio would be continued till the disease was brought to a zero level.I
