ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador Nancy Powell, and German Ambassador Christopher Brummer Thursday called on Ch. Amir Hussain, Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan at Parliament House separately here Thursday.
The US ambassador in Pakistan, Ms Powell has offered the Speaker to help in setting up an indigenous Resource Center for the parliament to help and strengthen democratic institutions in Pakistan. "Such a resource center will especially help in strengthening committee system of the parliament, Powell told Ch. Amir Hussein.
Nancy Powel beheld that leadership come from the Parliament "we are willing to support the democracy and democratic institutions."
Offering financial and material assistance to set up the resource center for the parliamentarians, she said that the assistance would include necessary equipment, books, training and exchange of visits of the parliamentarians and staff. In this connection, groups comprising the members of National Assembly will be visiting Capital Hill as well as State Legislatures so that they may have first hand knowledge and interaction with their counter parts in the United States.
The US Ambassador explained the working of US Senate and Congress as well as the Committee system. There has always been small attendance in Senate and the Congress during the session. However, our committee system is very effective and most of the business of both the House is undertaken during the proceedings of Committees, she added.
The US Ambassador also congratulated Ch. Amir Hussain on assuming the office of Speaker of the National Assembly. She commented the way in which the Speaker has been conducting the House with cool and confidence.
She was glad to see the increase in the representation of the women in the Parliament of Pakistan and said that most of them are well educated and women parliamentarians will mark their presence, felt in the Parliament.
Ch. Amir Hussain thanked for the compliments, expressed satisfaction over the existing warm cordial relations between the two countries and reiterated that Pakistan and US are old friends and will remain friends for all times to come.
Speaker acknowledged her gesture and said that this would be highly beneficial for strengthening the democratic institutions. National Assembly Secretariat will come up with a comprehensive proposal in this regard.
However, Ch. Amir Hussain asked for cooperation in upgrading the Research Center of the National Assembly, which will enhance the level of debates as well as legislation in the House.
"It would be appreciated if the US also provides prevalent Security System for the Parliament," Speaker asked the US Ambassador.
Later on, Christopher Brummer, Ambassador of Germany called on Honouralbe Speaker, Ch. Amir Hussain. He felicitated the Speaker on his election as Speaker of the August House. There would be more investment from Germany in Pakistan and an investment conference is being organized, in near future in Lahore, he stated.
"We attach high importance to the long-standing and multi-faceted relations between Pakistan and Germany," Ch. Amir Hussain asserted. He extended an invitation to Dr. Mrs. Rita Sussmuth, President of German Bundestag (National Assembly) to visit Pakistan along with a parliamentary delegation. Pakistan-German Friendship group is being reactivated, this would enhance inter-parliamentary exchanges between the two countries.
