Musharraf deserves credit for launching mega projects
ISLAMABAD: A spokesman of the Ministry of Communication has rejected the political parties' claims of their role in launching two mega projects including Gawadar Deep Sea Port and Makran Coastal Highway.
The spokesman in a press statement issued here on Saturday said that the present government has awarded all construction contracts for Gawadar Deep Sea Port and Makran Coastal Highway which had seen shelved by both the pervious regimes. It was only the commitment and dedicated pursuits of the President Gen Pervez Musharraf that two mega projects have been materialized, he added.
The spokesman clarified that the idea of Gawadar Deep Sea Port was conceived during the first term of Nawaz Sharif in 1993 but remained shelved even during his second term. Even the Benazir government did not touch this project due to non-availability of financial resources, he said.
He said that the present government genuinely deserved full credit for the mega projects launched in the country aimed at economic revival and national prosperity.
The present government took up the issue as one of its priority areas and the Ministry of Communication signed an agreement with Chinese government in August 2001, under which Chinese government will provide US $198 million for development of Gawadar Deep Sea Port phase-1 while Pakistan will contribute $50 million.
The spokesman added that work on phase-1 of the Gawadar Port Project was commenced on March 22, 2002 and it will be completed on March 23, 2005.
Referring to Makran Coastal Highway project, he said the work on the first of the four-sector project was started on July 1. He said the total length of Liari-Markan Ormara section in 248 km. Construction work on Liari-Ormara section of Makran coastal highway at the cost of Rs.3906 million in full swing by FWO overall progress is 30%.
The spokesman questioned that how one claim a project, which was still in a tendering phase. He said that 653 km in length, project is located in Southern Baluchistan running along the Makran coastal belt .the start point of the road is located at Sheikh Raj near about 100 north of Karachi on the existing RCD highway.
