July 9, 2001 The Los Angeles Times in its issue of July 9, 2001, has published an article titled ‘Far from Foreign in California‘ which spotlights the role of ethnic papers in informing and educating various ethnic groups in the United States. In the words of Barbara Reed, a Rutgers University Journalism Professor, “The ethnic press is alive and well because mainstream publications cannot address various issues that are central to these communities.” The article identifies leading ethnic newspapers, including Pakistan Link among the Pakistani papers, and quotes a senior member of the management thus: “I see it as a way to uplift the Pakistani community here in the United States.” Pakistan Link, according to the LA Times article, has a circulation of 25,000. The paper, in the words of its editor, seeks “to act as a cohesive, unfettered source of information. We make our arguments in an intelligent, reasoned manner so leaders in Washington and Pakistan will listen to us.” |
