A Letter to President Bush

By Saif M. Hussain & Family, Woodland Hills, CA

We American Muslims received your greetings for the holy month of Ramadan with a sense of sadness and puzzlement. As we try to focus on our daily fasting, prayers, contemplation and time spent with our families, we are unable to ignore the constant barrage of news about the continuing US bombardment of Afghanistan. The latest tragic incident involved the loss of perhaps 150 innocent lives in one Afghan village near Konduz.

It is beyond our comprehension why our forces must continue to inflict massive bombardment on Afghan towns and villages when the objectives of the military campaign have all but been met. When we add the most holiest Islamic month of Ramadan to this picture of bombardment it becomes all the more ugly.

We heard you state on TV that you “respect our faith”. We urge you to please stop this type of massive bombardment now. We are sure that your military objectives can be met by other more targeted means that are less threatening and damaging to innocent civilians as they try and focus on fulfilling their Islamic obligations in Ramadan.
