Different Dates
By Syed Hussaini, Anaheim Hills, CA
As an American Muslim, I am deeply chagrined at the total lack of unity amongst the Islamic religious leaders of North America. Once again we are going to celebrate Eid on different dates because of lack of consensus amongst the Islamic leaders on the day of commencement of Ramadan.
What has happened to our critical thinking and logic? Is it truly a formidable challenge, one that cannot be overcome? Now we will not be only portrayed in the media as fanatics, but sadly also as an ignorant, disunited people. An Orange County Register reporter discussed the issue of the commencement of Ramadan on two separate dates with my wife recently. She didn’t know what to say. How should I explain the two Eid dates to my fifteen-year-old son? He questions this lack of logic and he is not even an adult yet!
The moon is where it always has been and where it always will be. The Turks have followed the scientific path and have determined by simple yet accurate methods when the new moon appears. They have been following this procedure since the 1940’s!
