Double Standards?

President Musharraf’s loyalty to the US has “earned” him one billion plus dollars in aid. His speech at the United Nations on November 10 and a subsequent address at the NYC Hilton on November 11, besides other matters pointed to two things: Harassment of Pakistanis in the USA, and plans for “good governance and genuine democracy” in Pakistan.

But in both these speeches, he failed to mention the restoration of equal voting rights for the minorities. So much for his “genuine democracy.”

At the NYC Hilton in the presence of a thousand expatriates, he began his address with the remarks, “I have spoken to President George W. Bush, who has promised to talk to Attorney General John Ashcroft,” regarding the occasional harassment that minority Pakistanis face in USA. But when his attention was directed to the atrocities committed against minorities in his own country, including the recent killing of 16 Christians during a worship service, the President was indignantly evasive and asked, “What do you want me to say about it?”
