The Liberation of Kabul and Beyond
By Omar Mirza , Hempstead, NY
The scene that flashed across on CNN was of the sheer unmitigated joy of the Kabulis and the people of Mazar-i-Sharif at having rid themselves of the Taliban. They were dancing in the streets and on the top of trucks; women were reportedly throwing off the hated veils and burqas they had been forced to wear, and men were heading for the barbers to shave off unwanted facial hair after five years of Taliban rule.
Pakistanis are today despised by Afghans as a result of years of ISI’s attempts to impose Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, and then the Taliban, on the Afghan people. The reports of the killings of Pakistani-Taliban emerging from Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif in the wake of the capture of these cities by the Northern Alliance should serve as a note of warning to the eager ‘jihadi’ supporters of the Taliban in Pakistan such as TNSM (Tehreek-e-Nifaz-Shariat-i-Muhammadi) and others.
The Afghans should now be left to sort out their own problems.
