Double Standards?

By Walter E. Marston, San Francisco, CA

Mr. Victor Gill hit the nail on the head. He mentioned the question that was asked of the President of Pakistan about the incident in a Christian Church in Bahawalpur. I would like to go a little further. But first of all let me tell you that I am a Pakistani American. I left Pakistan in 1980.

I have been reading the Pakistan Link very closely. I am glad that I decided to subscribe to this paper. The information I get from your paper is worth its weight in gold.

What I have been noticing of late is the number of letters and articles concerning the ill treatment of Pakistani Americans who are Muslims. But you have never cared to give any news of how Pakistani Christians are treated in Pakistan, especially in the province of Punjab. Except for the period from 1947 to the mid-seventies, when Christians were given a fairly good deal, it has almost been a bed of thorns. At every turn and twist they have been discriminated against.

I personally feel that the Muslims here have had it real good. They have been able to go to their mosques without fear of being killed or harassed. They have worked hard and have risen to positions of power. Even now, though there are some who are looking at you with suspicion, you can still practice your faith without fear. At your work place you can work in peace, knowing that the Government of the United States will not tolerate hatred. Can the same be said for the Christians living in Pakistan?
