US to remain impartial
in Pakistan elections: Patterson
KARACHI:
The United States ambassador to Pakistan has said her country would
remain impartial in the forthcoming general elections in Pakistan.
US envoy Anne W. Patterson said the government of Pakistan
has been told that the United States would not back any declaration
of emergency or the imposition of martial law in the country.
A delegation of US diplomats headed by the US ambassador
visited the offices of Daily Jang, The News and Geo News in Karachi
on Wednesday. The US Consul General in Karachi and Press Attaché
at the Islamabad embassy also accompanied her.
The US ambassador visited various sections of the Jang
Group and Geo News and held a meeting with the editorial board of
the organization to exchange views on various national and international
issues.
Responding to a question, Patterson denied any US role
in the dialogue between Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson
Benazir Bhutto and President Pervez Musharraf. She said US think-tanks,
Congressmen and senators were well aware of the policies of PPP Chairperson
Benazir Bhutto, while former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is less known.
She said that her country wants Benazir Bhutto to be
given an opportunity to play her role in Pakistan’s politics
and if her party wins a majority she should be allowed to be the prime
minister.
Replying to another question, the US envoy agreed
that the situation in Waziristan had deteriorated and clarified that
her country was not opposed to a dialogue for peace in the area. She
emphasized the need for a dialogue to seek a solution to the area’s
problems.
