HEC directs inquiry into alleged plagiarism cases at universities
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman
Dr Attaur Rahman on Friday directed the vice-chancellors of the University
of Peshawar and the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, to form
inquiry committees to investigate cases of alleged plagiarism by some
of their faculty members.
Rehman said that the universities would have to take
strict punitive action against people responsible for the incidents,
if the allegations proved to be correct. According to the HEC, Dr
Waseem Khan of the Institute of Education and Research (IER), University
of Peshawar, allegedly reproduced a chapter of a book, ‘Measurement
and Evaluation in Teaching’ authored by Norman E Gronlund and
Robert L Linn in his research paper published in the Journal of Education
and Research without any acknowledgments.
Mahmood of the University of Agriculture and another
faculty member have also been accused of copying the work of Prof
JH Sun and for publishing it as their own, the HEC said.
Meanwhile, sources said that the University of the Punjab
has served charge sheets to five faculty members of the Center for
High Energy Physics over allegations that they had plagiarised and
reproduced research articles of foreign authors. The teachers include
Dr Fazl-e-Aleem, Maqsood Ahmad, Rashid Ahmad, M Saeed Khan and Sohail
Afzaal Tahir.
An earlier case of plagiarism at the International Islamic
University led to the resignation of one of its faculty members after
the HEC intervened in the issue.
The HEC has stated that it would show “zero
tolerance” to plagiarism in higher education institutes and
has urged university vice-chancellors to dismiss any faculty members
involved in such incidents.
