Load-shedding to end by next two years: PM
SHEIKHUPURA: Prime Minister Syed Yosuf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday that load-shedding would be overcome within next two years. Speaking at inaugural ceremony of wheat sowing here at Rice Research Institute Kalashah Kaku here, Prime Minister said Executive Council of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already approved the construction of Diamer Bhasha dam. Premier Gilani said that the dam would bring agricultural revolution in the country. He said that a huge sum of Rs 32 billion is being provided as subsidy on fertilizers alone to the growers, besides ensuring provision of high quality seeds. “An amount of Rs 8 billion is being spent on the improvement of water courses to check seepage of irrigation water and ensure that it reaches tail ends,” he added. Prime Minister said that wheat support price has also been increased substantially and fixed at Rs 950 with the aim to encourage farmers for growing maximum amount of wheat. Referring to lower water discharge in Chenab from India, Prime Minister said he talked to Indian Prime Minister who assured that Pakistan’s share of water as per Indus Water Treaty would be ensured. Addressing the gathering, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the farmers would be provided free of cost tube wells run by the solar energy in addition to provision of green tractors for the growth of agriculture sector. He said India wants to build nine to 10 more dams after Baghliar dam. He said Pakistan’s agriculture sector would collapse if India didn’t release the Chenab water under Indus Basin Treaty next year.
