Countrywide polio cases count surges to 96
KARACHI: The total number of polio cases in Pakistan has urged to 96, reflecting a critical situation for the country’s health planners, sources in the National Programme for Immunisation told Daily Times. Some 15 new cases were detected during October 15 to November 7 this year in the country. Out of the total 96 cases, 16 cases were in Sindh, 9 in NWFP, 37 in Balochistan, 29 in Punjab and 5 in Islamabad. An overwhelming number of cases among all provinces hailed from the NWFP. The disease is transmitted via environment to children up to 5-6 years of age. The initial attack of the disease results in muscles spasms, accompanied by high fever and extreme joint pain. In the final stage, the victim is rendering paralysed. Researchers world over have so far failed to find a remedy for the disease, which continues to attack a substantial number of children in third world countries. tanveer sher
