Shaukat Aziz yet to apply for PML ticket
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shaukat Aziz
has not yet applied for a Pakistan Muslim League (PML) ticket to contest
general elections scheduled for January 8, sources told Daily Times
on Thursday. The sources said Aziz was likely to be “accommodated”
in the second round of elections that would start when the winners
of two or more seats would choose only one and re-election would be
held for the vacant seat. The PML had decided to re-field former MNAs
in their previous constituencies, they said. They said the party’s
parliamentary board had short-listed 300 candidates for party tickets
from a total of around 3,300 ticket-seekers. “Barring a few,
all former MNAs are likely to get party tickets,” they said.
Aziz was a member of the PML 25-member parliamentary board but did
not apply for a party ticket, they said. A meeting of the parliamentary
board entered the second day on Thursday and the names of women and
minority candidates were expected to be finalised today (Friday).
Candidates for the general seats in the National Assembly would be
named on Saturday, they said. irfan ghauri
