Press freedom essential, govt. steps tarnishing
the country’s image: Bhutto
KARACHI:
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Chairperson, Ms Benazir Bhutto during
her visit to the office of Geo TV on Monday, termed the freedom of
press and media as essential, saying the government’s steps
are tarnishing the image of the country.
She said PPP respected the freedom of press during its
rule.
Answering different questions on the occasion, PPP Chairperson
referred to her meeting with American Ambassador and said that the
US wants the moderate forces in the country to come together and work
in unison towards strengthening the democracy.
Ms Benazir Bhutto denied any meeting with President
Musharraf, saying this kind of rumors are meant to misguide the people.
Regarding decision of the Supreme Court to throw the
petitions challenging the legality of the President’s re-election,
she said one should not be surprised at the decisions of the newly
formed SC.
She was of the opinion that the objective of proclamation
of emergency rule in the country was certainly not to control extremism
and terrorism but it was meant to pre-empt the decision of the SC
against the President’s re-election.
PPP is considering the option of boycotting the
election and for this opinion of all the political parties will be
sought so that all should agree on one point agenda, she said, adding,
the final decision with regard to contesting the elections will be
made after taking all the parties on board.
