700 out of every 100,000 Pak kids afflicted
with diabetes
KARACHI, Nov 21 : As many as 700 out of every 100,000
children living in Karachi are afflicted with diabetes mellitus.
The percentage of prevalence of diabetes among the elders
is much more.
This was stated by Associate Professor of National Institute
of Child Health, Dr Jamal Raza, while delivering a lecture at a medical
education programme organised by Pakistan Islamic Medical Association
Karachi.
It was stated that diabetes among the children is generally
hereditary or is through infection.
The parents were warned that a child may have diabetes
in the initial 10 years.
Excessive urination as well as thirst and continued
loss of weight may be indication for diabetes. The parents were asked
to get their children medically examined.
The proper looking after of children may save them from
further complications, it was pointed out.
Prof Dr Shaikh Zaman of Dow University of Health Sciences
in his lecture pointed out that regular exercise can also contribute
towards keeping the diabetes under control.
Dr Khurrum Shahid of Liaquat National Hospital
was of the view that diabetes may affect the eyesight, kidneys as
well as heart and brain.
