Modernisation of armed forces will continue: Mukhtar
Staff Report
RAWALPINDI: The government will go ahead with its plans to modernise the armed forces and strengthen their capabilities to effectively deal with internal and external challenges, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar said on Tuesday. “The government is well aware of the requirements of the armed forces and will take all necessary steps to fulfil their needs and strengthen their defence capabilities,” he said. Talking to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at the Defence Ministry, Mukhtar said that the country would continue to maintain a minimum credible deterrence presence to safeguard its national frontiers. The minister applauded the steps taken by the COAS to improve the welfare of soldiers and said the government would provide all necessary resources to facilitate this, following the COAS’ declaration that 2008 be ‘Year of The Soldier’. General Kayani briefed Mukhtar on the requirements, future development plans and operational preparedness of the country’s armed forces.
