Snap strike by transporters in Karachi
KARACHI:
Karachi Transport Ittihad (KTI), taking traffic sleuths’ actions
against smoke-emitting vehicles as an affront, went on an undeclared
protest strike here today, wrongly overtaking Karachiites all by surprise
to brave the ordeals for no fault of their own.
KTI president, Irshad Bukhari told that the Sindh High
Court (SHC) had granted three months time for the repairs of the vehicles
emitting smokes. Contrary to this, the provincial home minister allowed
them only two weeks’ time and had cautioned that following lapse
of this grace period, all smoke-emitting vehicles would be impounded,
while the traffic police, thereafter, went into actions against all
such vehicles.
The public transport, in fact, had thinned out since
last two/three days and buses on 5/6 routes had disappeared even yesterday,
while the city unaware was taken hostage today, when over 15,000 buses,
mini-buses and coaches all went into hidings.
Karachiites, especially the students (boys and
girls) were left nonplussed early in the morning, when they found
it almost impossible to reach in time at the examination halls for
their mathematics paper being held under the aegis of Board of Secondary
Education.
