‘New consular pact being finalised with Pakistan’
NEW DELHI: A new consular agreement is being finalised between India and Pakistan to ensure the speedy release of nationals of one of the two countries being held in prisons in the other, Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday. He told the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, that a judicial committee consisting of superior judges from both countries had been formed to address this issue. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s High Commission here has asked the Indian government to provide the details of over 500 Pakistani prisoners languishing in Indian jails. Sources said that consular access to 200 Pakistani prisoners had been sought, while travel documents to over 200 prisoners had also been issued for their repatriation to Pakistan. staff report
