Fire at Sindh Secretariat building destroys important records

KARACHI: Important records of Surveys and Land Revenue were destroyed as several offices of different government departments including Board of Revenue building were gutted in inferno that erupted at Sindh Secretariat, here on Thursday morning. The decades old building is located opposite to the Sindh HomeDepartment at a short distance from Sindh High Court building. A four-member investigation team has been formed on the directive of Sindh Chief Minister to probe into the incident. Fire fighting vehicles rushed to the scene and initiated rescue operation. Later, a number of Edhi and Chippa ambulances, police and Rangers also reached there. Firefighters knocked down a small iron door to reach out to the burning rooms. Some 13 vehicles including an automobile rescue unit and two snorkels took part in the operation. The burnt pieces of wooden roof continued to fell. The fire was finally put out at about 2:19pm. An official said the building housed offices of Armed Forces, Social Welfare, Planning and Developments and Revenue and Stamps Departments at its upper floor. Offices of different wings of these departments including survey branch and an office of IG Sindh were situated at lower floor, he said.
