Lawyers' protests continue in Karachi

KARACHI: Lawyers Thursday continued their protest on the fifth consecutive day of the ongoing Black Flag Week called by Pakistan Bar Counsel. They boycotted the proceedings in High Court, City and Malir courts and took out a rally along with members of civil society from City Court to Karachi Press Club. A combined meeting of general bodies of Sindh, Malir and Karachi Bar associations was held here at City Court. Addressing the meeting, Justice (Retd.) Wajihuddin Ahmed said: “ The crime of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was that he stopped the fraud of Steel Mill’s privatization.” The beneficiaries of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) are not happy with the restoration of real judges and they want to provide protection to the PCO-Judges, he observed. Justice (Retd.) Wajihuddin Ahmed said any restoration of judges without chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry will be unacceptable. “The present judges should be sacked in a fashion similar to the one by which Musharraf removed the previous judges,” he suggested. After the general bodies meeting, the lawyers took out a rally led by Wajihuddin Ahmed in which members of civil society and workers of various political parties also participated. The participants chanted slogans in favor of the restoration of the deposed judges. Amir Jamat-i-Islami Karachi, Muhammad Hussain Mehanti and Presidnet Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) addressed the rally.
