Judges restoration resolution to be ineffective: Malik Qayyum

ISLAMABAD: Attorney General Malik Mohammed Qayym said it is futile attempt on the part of Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif to table a resolution at the National Assembly for the restoration of judges, as the dismissal of judges is quite constitutional. Moreover, a confidant of the president said any such resolution would be challenged in the court. Talking to Geo News, Malik Mohammed Qayyum said the Murree Declaration regarding the restoration of judges will have no legal effect, as the kinds of resolution may the desire of the members of the parliament, but cannot be legislated into a law. ‘Several resolutions were approved in the past as well but without any legal effect,’ he added. Meantime, the sources privy to the Presidential House said two-third majority is needed in both the houses to cause amendment in the constitution for the restoration of deposed judges. An associate of president said it would be in conflict with the constitution to try to restore the deposed judges through a resolution and it would challenge in the court. It was further said PPP violated his pledge by falling in agreement for the resolution aimed at restoration of judges; the party gave its pledge that it would not bring any such resolution, however now it is dancing to the tunes of PML-N. The sources said President Pervez Musharraf will chair a high level meeting behind the closed doors, with decision of calling NA session expected.
