US condemns bombings
WASHINGTON: The US expressed concern on Monday over the violence lashing Pakistan, condemning particularly the suicide attack on Sunday, and reaffirmed its support to the country in confronting extremist violence. “We are concerned by the continuing violence in Pakistan and condemn those recent suicide bombings, including one that took the lives of a number of individuals ... who were meeting to try and talk about what they could do to oppose Al Qaeda and the Taliban,” said State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey. He said the US would do whatever it could to support Pakistan confront extremist violence. He did not, however, elaborate any conceived additional support. “At this point, I can’t offer you anything new in terms of programmes or assistance.” Instead, he cited Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte’s assurance at a congressional hearing of continued security and development assistance. app
