Shaukat urges private sector to invest in IT industry
LAHORE:
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has urged the private sector to invest in
information technology industry to benefit from the opportunities of
this fast growing field. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of
IT Village, the software technology park set up by NETSOL Technologies
at Ghazi Road here Friday.
The inauguration ceremony was attended
among others by Punjab Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool, Federal Minister
for Information Technology and Telecommunications Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari,
State Minister for Information Technology Ali Asjad Malhi, Chairman
NETSOL Technologies Najeeb Ghauri, President NETSOL Salim Ghauri, senior
officials and representatives of Pakistani and foreign IT companies.
Shaukat Aziz said that the vision for
Pakistan was that of a high growth country, observing that this could
be translated into reality by investing in non-traditional sectors like
information technology, in addition to the traditional ones. Referring
to his recent meeting with a group of businessmen representing 30 leading
Pakistani companies in Islamabad, he said the brainstorming session
with them focused on opportunities of investment in the information
technology sector.
The government, he said, had taken many
steps over the last several years to provide an enabling environment
to this sector. "We have opened the telecom sector besides developing
infrastructure and providing incentives to the IT sector," he remarked.
He said that most of the telecom
sector was going to be privatized soon, and expressed the hope that
the rates of telecom services would be further reduced in the wake of
privatization.
