No review petition or fresh reference against
CJ
ISLAMABAD:
In a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, it
was agreed that neither a review petition will be filed in the Supreme
Court against the reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad
Chaudhry nor any fresh reference would be filed against the CJ, sources
said.
The participants of the meeting criticized legal advisors
of the government. The meeting was especially summoned to review the
situation arising out of the historic judgment of the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Shaukat
Aziz said the government respects the dignity of the Supreme Court,
adding “all of us have accepted the judgment of the apex court
with ‘grace and dignity’.”
He reiterated it was not the time to claim victory or
defeat but (it is time to) move forward towards the betterment of
the people and the country. “The Constitution and the law have
prevailed and must prevail at all times,” he added.
“We should all look ahead to the elections scheduled
in the coming months and prepare ourselves to participate wholeheartedly
in the forthcoming democratic process,” he maintained.
The meeting condemned the recent acts of violence in
different parts of the country and noted that the nation was united
to frustrate the designs of those who wanted to destabilise Pakistan
and damage the image of Islam.
The government counsels in the chief justice Senator
Wasim Sajjad, Dr. Khalid Ranjha and Justice (Rtd) Malik Qayyum briefed
the meeting about the Supreme Court verdict.
The meeting also discussed the upcoming presidential
elections, sources said. The participants of the meeting were informed
that the presidential election will be held between September 15-October
15, while the National Assembly will be dissolved between November
12-15 and a caretaker setup will be established.
