US to provide $14.9m to schools in Sindh, Blochistan, Islamabad
ISLAMABAD July 07 : The United States government will
provide $14.9 million (Rs. 894 million) to 7,000 government schools
in Sindh, Blochistan and the Islamabad Capital Territory area for
school improvement, it was announced on Thursday.
US ambassador Ryan C. Crocker joined Secretary of Education,
Sajid Hassan, in a ceremony July 7 to launch the USAID-funded School
improvement initiative under the Education Sector Reforms Assistance
program (ESRA).
Cheques were distributed to 30 primary school Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) members of Bhara Kua for school improvement.
Each school received a check for $450 today. The total grant may increase
to $1,500 per school based on performance. PTAs that fall to achieve
the expected milestones of performance will not qualify for the second
installment.
Ambassador Crocker commended that PTA and the community
members for their personal commitment to a better teaching and learning
environment and pledged the US government’s unwavering commitment
to the cause of education in Pakistan.
Organized in collaboration with the Federal Directorate
of Education, the award ceremony was attended by Secretary of Education,
Sajid Hassan, Director General of PDE Brig. (Retd) Maqsud-ul-Hsan;
PTA members, office-bearers and head teachers from a 165 schools benefiting
from ESRA Plus interventions, and students.
