Move to impeach president will be countered: PML-Q

* Party leader says existence of assemblies proves Musharraf a constitutional president

By Zakir Hassnain

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) would counter the government’s move to impeach President Pervez Musharraf, party leaders said on Thursday. They said that Musharraf would not use Article 58(2b) to dissolve the assemblies but would instead defend himself in parliament. However, a PML-Q leader said that if Musharraf did use Article 58(2b) as a last resort, it would mean that he had fulfilled his national duty. The PML-Q leaders were expressing their views at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club. PML-Q Central Senior Vice President Nisar Muhammad Khan, Central Deputy Information Secretary Moazzam Butt and Saeed Butt spoke to the reporters. Nisar said that nobody from the government or the opposition knew who had the required number of parliamentarians to impeach or save Musharraf. Assemblies: The PML-Q leader said that the existence of the assemblies proved that Musharraf was a constitutional president. He added that when the PML-Q was in power, the country’s reserves stood at $16 billion but had now come down to $8/9 billion under the present government. He said the coalition had not delivered on its promises. Nisar said that the PML-Q government had produced 2200 megawatts of electricity whereas the present government had failed to produce even a single megawatt. Moazzam Butt said that the United States should know that the people of this region wanted to get rid of narcotics, land mafia, money launderers, arms dealers and kidnappers. He said that the Karzai government had failed and was thus levelling baseless allegations against Pakistan to hide its failure. Butt urged the US government to change its policy for the restoration of peace in the region.
