Resignations wouldn’t impact presidential
election: AG
ISLAMABAD:
Attorney General of Pakistan, Malik Muhammad Qayyum has said that
the resignation of any member of the assembly would have no impact
on the presidential election, besides the President with or without
uniform could contest the presidential election under the constitution
and law.
AG Malik Muhammad Qayyum, Dr. Khalid Ranjha, Sharifuddin
Pirzada, S.M. Zafar and Wasim Sajjad met the President General Pervez
Musharraf here.
Later, AG Malik Muhammad Qayyum told that the president
in his meeting with the constitutional and legal experts sought their
opinions on the presidential and general elections and no particular
issue was focused.
When quizzed, Malik Qayyum told that S. M. Zafar advised
the president to contest election without uniform, but this was a
political one, as the constitutional and legal position was that the
president could contest election with or without uniform and now it
depends on the president, as to what decision he takes.
AG further said that the President Musharraf could remain
president in uniform, following the 17th Amendment. He said that the
resignation of any member assembly would have no impact on the Electoral
College. The presidential election could only be held back, in case
of the dissolution the assembly.
He said that the Supreme Court had already given
its decision in favour of the president’s uniform and, therefore
now, it was not likely that the SC would take some other decision
in this regard.
