Border fencing to start soon
By Iqbal Khattak
SHOLAM POST: Pakistan will soon begin fencing a 12-kilometre
area along the Pak-Afghan border in South Waziristan to halt cross-border
movement by insurgents, military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad
said on Wednesday.
“The fenced area will be guarded by soldiers,”
Maj Gen Arshad told a group of Pakistani and foreign journalists at
the Zarinoor army base outside Wana. He said the fencing would begin
when the equipment reaches the area. “Fencing will start soon,”
he added, but gave no specific date.
Commanding officer Maj Gen Gul Muhammad told the
journalists that Pakistani and coalition forces were regularly holding
meetings in the border area and were also “sharing information”.
He stopped short of elaborating what information was being shared
with the coalition forces. Maj Gen Muhammad said that he was manning
33 posts along the Afghan border and had made a three-tier troop deployment.
