Shaukat for constituting UN fund for quake victims

ISLAMABAD April 12 : Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has stressed the need for setting up of a UN standing fund to extend prompt and effective relief to the victims of natural disasters.
He was talking to UN Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information Shashi Tharoor in Islamabad yesterday.
He stressed that the setting up of such fund is imperative as the UN can not perform its relief activities effectively and promptly if it starts raising donations when people are dying in a disaster.
He appreciated the UN Secretary General's initiative in this regard to provide quick relief to the victims of natural disasters.
Mr.Shaukat Aziz said the United Nations and its agencies did an excellent job of coordinating relief activities with the Pakistan government after the October 08 earthquake.
The UN Under Secretary General said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz alongwith other two co-chairs of the high powered panel are doing a great job to reform the UN System so that it could discharge its responsibilities including the provision of relief assistance effectively.
