Gen Karamat: An Introduction
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan announces the appointment of General Jehangir Karamat, Ambassador-designate to United States of America. His curriculum vitae is as under:
He is a graduate of the National Defence College, the Command and Staff College, and the US Army Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth USA. He has a Masters in International Relations.
He was retired as Chairman, Joints Chiefs of Staff and Chief of Army Staff in October 1998. His senior level assignments included Director General Military Operations and Chief of General Staff. He also commanded troops in Saudi Arabia.
After his retirement General Karamat has been a visiting fellow at CISAC Stanford University, USA and the Brookings Institution Washington DC. He was part of a UN-sponsored study on Afghanistan and is Chairman Board of Governors of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.
He has been Colonel Commandant and Colonel in Chief of the Pakistan Armored Corps. He was also President Pakistan Polo Association. His parent cavalry regiment is the 13th Lancers.
