ELIT Program in Aid of Afghan Women
Philadelphia: Empowerment Through Learning Information Technology (eLIT) will organize a program in aid of the women of Afghanistan on October 19, 2002 at the Harrison Auditorium, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Funds raised at the event will help finance English literacy and computer technology classes for women and children in Afghanistan.
The event will feature: a performance by Courtyard Dancers, a diverse body of South Asian Americans who perform contemporary dance from South Asia based on classical and interpretive Kathak and other folk styles; 𠆊sian Misbehavin’, a performance by a group of Asian American artists from Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York that will include inspirational poetry and comedy; and ‘Burka,’ that will present the world from the eyes of an Afghan woman covered in a burka. It will feature an emotionally charged performance by a New York playwright and director Bina Sharif. While the two countries are on the verge of war, women of India and Pakistan are holding hands with their Philadelphian counterparts to make a difference in the lives of women all over the world. Members of eLIT come from a variety of professional and cultural and national backgrounds and are working together. ELIT membership is open to everyone regardless of gender.
eLIT is a non-profit organization founded by women of Delaware valley under the leadership of Dr. Safia Rizvi., Working Mother of the Year 2001 for Working Women Magazine.
